The ACTA2 protein (NP_001604.1; P62736) is composed of 377 amino acids, which results in a 42 kDa protein.
ACTA2 belongs to the highly conserved actin family that is involved in various types of cell motility, structure and integrity. Polymerization of globular actin leads to a structural filament in the form of a two-stranded helix. Each actin can bind to 4 others. This actin is an alpha actin that is found in skeletal muscle. The major function of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) is contraction to regulate blood pressure and flow. SMC contractile force requires cyclic interactions between SMC alpha-actin (ACTA2) and the beta-myosin heavy chain (MYH11).
